Case Study
Addenbrooke’s Hospital – Pathology Laboratories
Location: Addenbrooke's Hospital – Fourth & Fifth Floors, Pathology Wing

Time on Site: 14 Months - Phased Programme
Purpose of the Project
To refurbish areas across the fourth and fifth floors of the hospital’s Pathology Wing to enable the installation of new pathology equipment while allowing the wider department to remain operational.
Works Undertaken on Site
The project was delivered across six separate phases over a 14-month programme.
Temporary fire-rated partitions were installed to isolate each work area from the live department. ABC then delivered the required mechanical and electrical services and finishes within each phase.
Individual areas were completed and formally handed over before staff occupied them and the programme progressed to the next phase.
Full handover and witnessing of the installed systems was undertaken on completion.
Challenges
Maintaining operational pathology services throughout the programme was the principal challenge.
Careful phasing was essential to ensure construction activities, equipment installation and the continuing use of adjacent areas could operate safely alongside one another.
ABC’s Site Manager and Project Manager worked closely with the hospital estates team, equipment supplier and users to coordinate programme dates for each phase.
The M&E design was similarly developed around the hospital’s existing systems, with user meetings helping to ensure the completed installations met operational requirements.
