Case Study

Royal Hampshire County Hospital – Mammography Rooms

Location:  Royal Hampshire County Hospital - Second Floor

  Value of Works:  £122,500

Tender & Design Period:  10 Weeks

  Time on Site:  3 Weeks

Purpose of the Project

To replace two existing mammography rooms within the department while minimising the overall period of disruption to the hospital’s mammography service.

The decision was taken to undertake both rooms simultaneously, reducing available capacity during the works but enabling the complete programme to be delivered within just three weeks.

Works Undertaken on Site

ABC coordinated the refurbishment and preparation of both mammography rooms around the requirements of the replacement equipment.

Because of the relatively compact nature of the rooms, the design approach was kept deliberately clean and minimal, developed in collaboration with hospital staff and users to make effective use of the available space.

Challenges

The department is located on the second floor of an extremely busy hospital where external space and parking are at a premium.

It was therefore not possible to establish a conventional site compound or skip area. Waste removal and site logistics had to be carefully planned to avoid interference with patients, staff and normal hospital activities.

Despite the restricted programme and working environment, both rooms were successfully completed on time and within budget.
