To carry out a complete refurbishment of an existing X-ray room within a live department, including changes to improve bed access and accommodate a revised equipment layout.
A new structural opening was formed through an existing 400mm-thick external wall to accommodate a double lead-lined door set and provide bed access directly from the reception area.
Existing non-compliant electrical circuits identified within the X-ray room were rewired to meet current requirements.
The equipment orientation was also changed, requiring the construction of a new structural ceiling to accommodate the revised installation.
The X-ray room is positioned immediately alongside the department’s reception area, making careful management of noise, access and disruption essential.
Structural works to create the new door opening were therefore undertaken out of hours.
The age of the building also presented additional challenges, including the identification of electrical installations requiring upgrading. These additional works were incorporated without extending the original programme.
Regular coordination with the equipment provider, estates team, staff and users ensured works could be planned around the busiest patient periods.
